In China, the word for "craftsman" was created during the Spring and Autumn Period (770–476 BC) when skillful artisans began to engage in individual handicraft production as a result of division of labor. At first the word mainly referred to carpenters. Its use expanded to cover all handicraftsmen during the Eastern Han Dynasty (25–220).
