The Three Kingdoms period (220–280) in Chinese history was an era of disunity following the fall of the Eastern Han Dynasty (25–220), during which there arose three powerful kingdoms: Wei (220–265), Shu (221–263), and Wu (222–280). In a strict academic sense, it lasted from 220, when the founding of the Wei Kingdom put an end to the Han regime, to 265, when Wei was replaced by the Jin regime; yet historians usually extend the starting point to 190, when warlord Dong Zhuo abducted Emperor Xiandi of the Han Dynasty (206 BC–AD 220) from the capital Luoyang and the end point to 280, when the Wu Kingdom was conquered by the Jin Dynasty (265–420).
