The  Book of Songs , also translated as the  Classic of Poetry , is the oldest extant collection of Chinese poetry. It comprises 305 poems and songs dating from the 11th century BC (the beginning of the Western Zhou Dynasty) to the 7th century BC (the middle of the Spring and Autumn Period). The  Book of Songs  towers over the literary peaks at the source of the long and yet vigorous literary river in Chinese history.
