The Water-Sprinkling Festival is the New Year of the Dai ethnic group in China. It is the grandest traditional festival for the Dai people. It is celebrated between the sixth day of the sixth month and the sixth day of the seventh month of the Dai calendar, which is in mid-April, about ten days after the Qingming Festival. The Blang, De'ang, and Achang ethnic groups also celebrate the Water-Sprinkling Festival. With the festival's origin closely related to Therevada Buddhism, many of its activities are Buddhist. Simultaneously, the celebrating activities also convey people's expectation to avert disasters such as drought and fire.
