The Western Xia Dynasty (1038–1227) was a northwestern regime coexisting with the Song Dynasty (960–1279). The ethnic Tangut people made up the majority of its population. It was founded by Li Yuanhao (Emperor Jingzong of the Western Xia Dynasty) in the capital city of Xingqing (today's Yinchuan, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region), which was later renamed Zhongxing. The empire shared Chinese territory first with the Northern Song and Liao dynasties and then with the Southern Song and Jin dynasties. After the reign of 10 emperors, it was annihilated by the Mongols in 1227.
