Alchemy was a practice to make elixirs, rising successively in China, Greece, India, Arabia, and Western Europe in ancient times. Ancient Chinese focused on the concoction of "magic pills," or " lingdan " in Chinese, hence the Chinese called alchemy liandanshu . Since it involved the transformation of matter, this practice was regarded as the forerunner of chemistry.
