It is an ethnic minority group in China. The Tatar people live across Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, with a population of 3,544 in 2020. They speak the Tatar language, which belongs to the Western Hun branch of the Turkic group of the Altaic family of languages. They generally use the Uygur or Kazak written script. The Tatar people were formed through the blending and evolution of the Bulgars, Kipchaks, and Mongolians over the course of history. The historical records in Chinese referred to the Tatars as the Dada (written in different homophonic Chinese characters as 达怛 or 鞑靼) . In the early 19th century, the Tatars began migrating to China.
