The Western Zhou Dynasty (1046–771 BC) was the third Chinese dynasty, beginning in 1046 BC, when King Wu of Zhou toppled the Shang Dynasty (1600–1046 BC). The dynasty fell in 771 BC when King You of Zhou was killed. During this period, the vassals came to pay tribute to the imperial court, and the Zhou regime kept the country under unified control. The dynasty was named "Western Zhou" because its capital Zongzhou, also known as Haojing, was located in the west.
